Helpful Information Needed on Shipping a Car to Portugal:

• The government of Portugal gives people the opportunity to bring their car and drive for personal use up to 180 days a year. As long as the vehicle is a registered vehicle, and it is registered by you, it will only be used by you and your family in the country.
• To avoid harassment or rejection, you must also have a valid driver’s license and insurance from your home country.
• When shipping cars to Portugal, for those whose aim is to work or retire at Portugal, the car has to be registered after 180 days. To do this, you need a residency permit which can only be given through application, and that is, you apply for it.
• The car would go through proper scrutiny and inspection to ensure that it meets the Portuguese highway standards. The inspection would be done under a recognized body such as authorized inspection center within the country.There are variations in the standards in respect to the model and age of the car. There are exceptional rules that bind classic or collectible cars. However, any car that meets the European standard would undergo Portuguese inspection.
• At the point of applying for your residency permit, your foreign driver’s license would be collected, so as to apply for a Portuguese driver’s license.  The only exception to this is, if you are importing a new car into the country from outside Portugal, Value Added Tax would not be collected from you, but if you sell the car within a year, the tax would automatically be due for renewal. A car can be shipped into the country duty-free once in 5 years.
• There is a card used in Portugal called “All-in-One” card which must be kept in the car at all times. This card serves as vehicle registration, license plate, and log book. After getting this card, you are expected to get a new license plate. Your car can be registered at any local civil registry office. All documents you will be needing for the process are in Portuguese.

 

However, whenever you are confused or clueless about what to do, the Portuguese government established a helpful staff known as Citizen’s shop, this assists foreigners in opening utility accounts, apply for ID cards and ensure they follow procedures and instructions carefully. One can be easily confused and jump processes, because all the documents needed are in Portuguese. But it is best you get help if you are not fluent in the language.
